Dull Women’s Wine Club

Join me as I pick wines based on the label and give thoroughly dull reviews. No fancy tasting notes. Just good drinking!

REviews

  • Alchemy Bar Mixology Class

If you have ever been on a Carnival cruise, you have probably seen the Alchemy Bar. It is a specialized cocktail bar where the bartenders are trained mixologists, ready to prepare personalized cocktails tailored to your preference. They have an interesting cocktail menu and a cult like following, of which I readily admit I am…

  • CRIOS – Rosè of Malbec

If you are looking for a sweet pink wine, this one is not for you.  And I am all the happier for it!   I love me some dry rosè and this new (to the US market) trend is making my inner French wine snob teary-eyed with joy. Lovely dry Malbec rose. Pairs beautifully with spicy…

  • October – Halloween Wines

I know…I’m late…Halloween has already passed.  But I want you to know how hard I tried to suck down all these bottles in the 10 days between when I bought them and Halloween.  My liver is still recovering. These wines were purchased solely for the Halloween themed name or label, and trust me, it wasn’t…

  • 2015 Wildest Dreams White Blend

Pale gold in color, crisp and juicy. Grapefruit and lemon softens to apricot and white raspberry. A bit on the light, sweet side for me, but paired with shrimp scampi very well. So I know the bottle is empty, but even though it was a bit on the sweet side for me, not everyone who…

About Me

Busch League Sommelier…WTF is that?

Not too long ago I read an article in a very well respected food and wine magazine. The author was talking about choosing wines by the label. She made the comment that some people considered that “Busch League.” And so I thought, “Well that’s me totally!”

While I certainly respect wine ratings and there is no question I love a good Opus One as much as the next girl (if someone else is buying!), when I am at the store looking for something for now, for tonight, very often I make the decision based on the label art…or a catchy name.

Sometimes it’s a hit and sometimes it’s a total miss but that’s part of the fun. I use a wine rating app to keep track so I can buy more of the hits and to make sure I don’t repeat the misses.

So then I thought “Why not blog it?” Maybe there are other peeps out there that want to buy a bottle based on the super cool label or crazy catchy name, but you don’t want to spend money in case it’s a total miss. I’m here for you!

Of course not everyone’s taste is the same and what I like may not be what you like, but I will try to be objective in my reviews in addition to giving you my personal opinion.  Am I qualified to dissect wines? Probably more than some and less than others! In my career I have taught classes on wine to servers for a national restaurant chain, I have travelled to vineyards around the US and internationally in France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, basically anywhere that will let me,  and let’s be honest…I just plain love wine.

So let’s have some fun with wine…like a Busch League Somm!

  • Bright Cellars Wine Club May 2016

Because one wine club wasn’t enough, I decided to join Bright Cellars wine club as well…surely those Harvard grads will be able to pick wines that match my palate, right? If they knew me, they would realize that, short of Boone’s Farm, my “palate” can put up with a lot! However, in lieu of traveling to…

  • Passarola Vinho Branco

Not too bad as a picnic white. A bit sweet for my normal taste, but refreshing and went fine with Chinese food I also really like the simple artwork on the label. Very Egyptian…or very Raiders of the Lost Ark, I can’t decide which one yet! Maybe Stargate? The color in the glass is more…
